Artists Surprise East Boro Boss

WHEN East Boro decided to brighten up its Weymouth office there was only one place to turn.

The organisation, which specialises in providing housing and support for vulnerable adults, commissioned artwork from its own Arts and Crafts Group for people with learning disabilities.

Members produced an array of stunning canvases which now hang proudly on the office walls, including a portrait of Chief Executive, Kevin Hodder

The painting of the boss now takes pride of place above the former Weymouth and Portland councillor’s desk at the Lynch Lane facility.

Mr Hodder explained: “The walls of our Lynch Lane office were a bit bland so I asked members of the East Boro Arts and Crafts Group if they would like to provide some paintings to brighten the place up.

“When I called in to see the group a few weeks ago they quickly hid a painting they were doing from me, so I kind of knew thy were up to something.

“When they came down to present the work, all was revealed. The guys had done a portrait of me and I have to say I was really honoured.”

He added: “Group supervisor Mel Symes and her team do a wonderful job, providing a fabulous resource for people with various forms and levels of learning disability.

“The work they have produced is outstanding and I congratulate them on their efforts.”

The East Boro Arts and Crafts Group is now busy preparing for its annual Exhibition and Open Day on Thursday November 27 at the Weymouth Community Fire Station in Radipole Lane.

“It’s their big event of the year”, added Mr Hodder, “and everyone is invited to come along and view the outstanding arts and crafts that members have produced this year, have a cup of tea and have a go on the tombola.”

The Exhibition and Open Day runs from 11am to 2.30pm and entrance is free.

East Boro’s Art and Crafts Group is open to adults with all levels of learning disabilities and anyone interested in joining can call Mel Symes on 07881-343129 or 01305-750403.
